Home Birth Film by San Antonio Birth Photographer

It is hard to put into words how special home birth is. While I support a family’s choice to birth wherever they feel safest, a home birth is such a unique experience that really can’t be replicated in another space. Can empowering births happen anywhere? Of course! But a home birth can only happen…at home. There is something so peaceful about laboring in your own home, being surrounded by a birth team you’ve hand selected and not a person more. I love when parents want to include the rest of the family (human and pet!). I’m not sure anything is better than snuggling your newborn in your own bed only minutes after giving birth!

This fourth time mom had such a powerful birth in her own home, surrounded by her husband, doula, midwife, three children, and birth photographer (that’s me <3). One-by-one we trickled into the home, assuming our roles and adding to the warmth and safety of her birth space. Sometimes births just feel like a sleepover with 60 seconds of hard work every couple of minutes: deep breaths and movement during a wave…and then laughing and chatting between. This birth was like that. Children roaming in and out of the room to check on mom. Dad inflating the birth pool and being in full “professional water-temperature checker” mode, a midwife and doula who trust birth just as much as they trust this mom.

The shift came quickly but subtly. The deep breaths became quicker and rougher. The chatting and smiling between waves happened less. And as this mom settled into the birth pool, the recognizable sound of an involuntary little push tipped off the whole team to be all hands on deck. After only a few minutes of pushing, this baby made his way earthside — with grandma and big siblings all getting to witness the miracle too. Home birth really shines in the immediate postpartum — skin-to-skin is the priority, mother’s comfort as well. There is plenty of space and time for the whole family to meet the new addition and make room in their hearts. This mom wanted a quick shower before being tucked into bed for the night. Before the team started saying their goodbyes, a quick “happy birthday” was sung to the newest addition.

This birth film captures the love, hard work, joy, and safety of birthing at home. I’m so grateful to this family for trusting me to be in their birth space and capture these memories! Check it out below!
